Horizant (gabapentin enacarbil) already tends to make people feel drowsy, dizzy, or a little unsteady on their feet, especially when you first start it. Guarumo is the wrap-up here: in an animal study, a water extract of the plant calmed down the central nervous system and caused noticeable muscle relaxation and loss of coordination. So the worry is simply that the two together could pile up and leave you feeling more sleepy, foggy, or wobbly than usual.

I want to be honest about how strong this evidence is, though. It comes from a lab/animal study, not from people taking both together, so this is a theoretical concern rather than a proven one. Still, it's an easy one to mention to your pharmacist or doctor, particularly if you notice extra grogginess or feel unsteady. Please don't change your Horizant on your own.

Guarumo (Cecropia obtusifolia) is a tropical tree used in Latin American traditional medicine, most often as a leaf tea for diabetes and high blood pressure. Some early laboratory and small human studies suggest it may modestly affect blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. About Gabapentin

What Is Gabapentin Used For?

Brand name: Horizant

Gabapentin (brands include Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, Gralise, and Horizant) is primarily used to manage postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) — the nerve pain that lingers after a shingles outbreak — in adults. Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, and gabapentin capsules, tablets, and oral solution are also used as add-on therapy for partial onset seizures (a type of epilepsy) in adults and children aged 3 and older.

Horizant (gabapentin enacarbil extended-release tablet) has two specific approvals: treatment of moderate-to-severe primary restless legs syndrome (RLS) in adults, and management of postherpetic neuralgia in adults. Horizant is not recommended for people who need to sleep during the day and stay awake at night. Gralise is approved only for postherpetic neuralgia and cannot be substituted for other gabapentin products due to its different release profile.
