Bendamustine Hydrochloride falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Hemp Agrimony interacts with.

Hemp agrimony contains hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA). Theoretically, using hemp agrimony with hepatotoxic drugs might have additive adverse effects on the liver. Some drugs that can adversely affect the liver include acetaminophen (Tylenol and others), amiodarone (Cordarone), carbamazepine (Tegretol), isoniazid (INH), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), methyldopa (Aldomet), fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), erythromycin (Erythrocin, Ilosone, others), phenytoin (Dilantin), lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), simvastatin (Zocor), and many others.

Here's the concern with pairing hemp agrimony and bendamustine. Hemp agrimony can contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, natural compounds that are known to be hard on the liver. Bendamustine, your chemotherapy for CLL or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, is already processed through the liver and can raise liver enzymes on its own. Stacking something else that stresses the liver on top of it could, in theory, add up and increase the risk of liver irritation or damage.

I'll be honest: this is a theoretical worry based on how these ingredients behave, not from studies in people taking both together. Still, given that most experts already discourage taking hemp agrimony internally because of liver safety, I'd skip it while you're on bendamustine. Please check with your oncology team before adding any herbal product.

Bendamustine Injection is used in adults for two blood cancers.

  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). How well it works compared with first-line treatments other than chlorambucil has not been established.
  • Indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) that has gotten worse during or within six months of treatment with rituximab or a rituximab-containing regimen.
