Higenamine and Aspirin, Pentazocine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Pentazocine

Aspirin, Pentazocine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Higenamine interacts with.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the risk of bleeding or bruising when taken with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
Animal research shows that higenamine inhibits platelet aggregation and reduces the size of thrombus formation.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Talwin Compound combines aspirin with the pain reliever pentazocine. The aspirin part is the piece that matters here, since it already thins the blood a bit by keeping platelets from clumping together. The concern with higenamine is that lab and animal studies suggest it may also slow down platelets and reduce clot formation. Stack the two, and in theory you could see more bleeding or bruising than aspirin alone would cause.

I want to be honest: this is a theoretical worry based mostly on animal data, not solid human studies, so don't panic. Still, watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or cuts that are slow to stop. If you take both, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before continuing.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Pentazocine page

“Talwin Compound pairs pentazocine, an opioid painkiller, with aspirin, and I read its supplement list with more concern than most. The great majority of entries do one of two things: raise the bleeding risk that aspirin already carries, or deepen the sedation pentazocine causes.”

About Higenamine

What is Higenamine?

  • Weight loss and fat burning
  • Pre-workout energy and performance
  • Appetite suppression
  • Athletic stimulant
  • Traditional medicine remedies

Higenamine is a plant-based stimulant compound added to many weight-loss and pre-workout supplements, but there is very little human evidence that it works and real concerns about heart and blood pressure effects. It is banned in sports by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and product labels often list inaccurate amounts, so most people should approach it with caution and talk to a pharmacist or doctor first.
