Why this applies to Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Higenamine interacts with.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that higenamine inhibits CYP2D6 enzymes. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear fluphenazine (Prolixin). In lab studies, higenamine appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that were to happen in real life, fluphenazine could build up a bit higher than usual, which might mean more of its typical side effects, things like drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure, muscle stiffness, or restless, jittery movements.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This has only been seen in test-tube research, not in actual people. On top of that, higenamine is a stimulant that can stir up your heart rate and blood pressure, which is its own concern alongside an antipsychotic. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Fluphenazine Used For?

Brand names: Prolixin, Permitil, Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine hydrochloride tablets and oral solution are indicated for the management of psychotic disorders. Fluphenazine Hydrochloride Injection is also used for psychotic disorders and can bridge patients to oral therapy.

Fluphenazine Decanoate Injection is a long-acting form specifically intended for patients who need extended antipsychotic treatment — for example, those with chronic schizophrenia who benefit from a single injection that can last up to four weeks or longer. It is not approved for behavioral problems related to intellectual disability, and it is not approved for dementia-related psychosis in elderly patients.
