Metoprolol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Higenamine interacts with.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that higenamine inhibits CYP2D6 enzymes. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the thing to keep an eye on with this combo. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear metoprolol out of your system. In lab studies, higenamine appears to block that same enzyme. If that happens in real life, your metoprolol could clear more slowly and build up, which may make its effects stronger. That could mean a heart rate that runs too slow, blood pressure dropping too low, dizziness, or feeling unusually tired.

On top of that, there's an odd push-and-pull here: higenamine acts like adrenaline and can speed up the heart, while metoprolol is meant to slow it down, so they work against each other. The good news is this enzyme effect has only been seen in the lab, not in people. Still, since higenamine has real heart and blood pressure concerns, I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Metoprolol Used For?

Brand names: Lopressor, Toprol XL

Metoprolol is used to treat several heart and blood pressure conditions. Metoprolol succinate extended-release tablets (including Toprol-XL) are approved for high blood pressure, angina pectoris (chest pain from the heart), and heart failure. Metoprolol tartrate tablets (including Lopressor) are approved for high blood pressure, angina, and — when used alongside intravenous metoprolol — to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death after a definite or suspected heart attack.

Metoprolol tartrate injection (intravenous form) is used in hemodynamically stable patients with a definite or suspected acute heart attack to reduce cardiovascular death, and is followed by oral metoprolol therapy. Lowering blood pressure with metoprolol reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
