Nicardipine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Higenamine interacts with.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the levels and clinical effects drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that higenamine inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes by 21%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with these two together. Your body clears nicardipine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a lab dish, higenamine slowed that enzyme down by about 21%. If that happened in a real person, nicardipine could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which might nudge its blood-pressure-lowering effect stronger than expected. You could feel that as dizziness, flushing, headache, swollen ankles, or a faster heartbeat.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. This comes from test-tube work only, never shown in actual patients. On top of that, higenamine itself can rev up heart rate and blood pressure, which works against what nicardipine is trying to do. Before mixing them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Nicardipine Used For?

Brand names: Cardene, Cardene SR, Cardene IV

Nicardipine Hydrochloride capsules are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and chronic stable angina (chest pain that comes on with physical effort). The capsules can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure or heart medications.

Intravenous (IV) nicardipine products — including Cardene I.V., Nicardipine Hydrochloride Injection, and Nicardipine Hydrochloride in Sodium Chloride — are used for the short-term treatment of high blood pressure in hospital settings when a patient cannot take oral medication. Once stable, patients are switched to oral therapy.
