Why this applies to Lapatinib

Lapatinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hops interacts with.

Theoretically, hops extract might alter metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates; however, this effect may not be clinically significant.
Animal research suggests that specific constituents of hops, called lupulones, can induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients with normal metabolism shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, decreases the concentration of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate, by 7.6%. This reduction is unlikely to be clinically relevant.

Here's the gist for Tykerb (lapatinib). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this drug down, and lab and animal studies hint that certain hops compounds might speed that enzyme up a little. If that happened, your body could clear lapatinib faster, which in theory might leave less of it working against your cancer.

The good news: the actual human evidence is very weak. When researchers tested a hops extract against a similar CYP3A4 drug, levels dropped by under 8 percent, which they considered too small to matter. So this is mostly theoretical. Still, because lapatinib is a cancer treatment where steady levels count, I'd run any hops product past your oncologist or pharmacist before adding it.

Hops are most often used for sleep and mild anxiety, frequently combined with valerian, but the human evidence is limited and not very strong. About Lapatinib

What Is Lapatinib Used For?

Brand name: Tykerb

Lapatinib tablets are used in combination with other medicines to treat certain types of advanced or metastatic breast cancer in patients whose tumors overexpress HER2 (a protein that drives tumor growth). It is not used alone.

Specifically, lapatinib tablets are used with capecitabine for HER2-positive advanced or metastatic breast cancer in patients who have already received prior therapy (including certain chemotherapy drugs and trastuzumab). Lapatinib tablets are also used with letrozole for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer when hormonal therapy is appropriate. Tykerb is the brand name product with these same indicated uses.
