Why this applies to Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir Ritonavir

Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir Ritonavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hops interacts with.

Theoretically, hops extract might alter metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates; however, this effect may not be clinically significant.
Animal research suggests that specific constituents of hops, called lupulones, can induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme activity. However, a pharmacokinetic study in healthy postmenopausal patients with normal metabolism shows that taking a standardized extract of spent hops containing prenylated phenols, as 59.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, decreases the concentration of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate, by 7.6%. This reduction is unlikely to be clinically relevant.

Here's the gist with Technivie (the ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir combo). The ritonavir piece in this medicine works partly by leaning on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Hops, in lab and animal studies, has shown a slight tendency to speed up that same enzyme. In theory, that could nudge some of these drug levels down a touch, which is the last thing you'd want when you're trying to fully clear hepatitis C.

That said, the real-world evidence here is very thin. A human study found only about an 8% drop in a similar drug, which isn't considered meaningful. So I wouldn't lose sleep over an occasional cup, but since finishing this treatment matters so much, just mention any hops supplement to your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, and Ritonavir Used For?

Brand name: Technivie

  • The combination of ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir is usually used in combination with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol), but sometimes it is used alone to treat a certain type of chronic (long-term) hepatitis C infection (swelling of the liver caused by a virus). Ombitasvir is a hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS5A inhibitor. It works by stopping the virus that causes hepatitis C from spreading inside the body. Paritaprevir is a protease inhibitor. It works by decreasing the amount of HCV in the body. Ritonavir is a protease inhibitor. It helps to increase the amount of paritaprevir in the body so that the medication will have a greater effect. It is not known if ombitasvir, paritaprevir, or ritonavir prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
