Here's the gist with clonidine (Catapres): it already works to bring your blood pressure down by relaxing your blood vessels and slowing your heart rate. Lab and animal studies hint that horny goat weed may also have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. Stack the two together and, in theory, your pressure could dip lower than intended.

I want to be honest about the evidence though. This is theoretical, drawn from test-tube and animal work, and it has not actually been reported in people. So I'm not ringing alarm bells. Still, if you notice dizziness, lightheadedness when standing, unusual tiredness, or a slow heartbeat, that's worth paying attention to. Before adding this herb, please run it past your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

What Is Clonidine Used For?

Brand name: Catapres

Clonidine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Several products — including Clonidine Hydrochloride tablets, Javadin oral solution, Nexiclon XR extended-release tablets, and Catapres-TTS skin patches — are approved for this use, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Extended-release formulations — including Onyda XR oral suspension and clonidine hydrochloride extended-release tablets (such as Kapvay) — are approved to treat ADHD in children and teenagers ages 6 to 17, either on their own or alongside stimulant medications. Separately, clonidine injection products (Duraclon and others) are used alongside opioid pain medicines to treat severe cancer pain that opioids alone cannot control adequately.
