Here's the simple version: defibrotide is a strong clot-preventing medicine given in the hospital after a stem cell transplant, usually to people who are already pretty sick. Lab and animal studies hint that horny goat weed can also make blood platelets less sticky, which could in theory add to defibrotide's clot-fighting action. Stacked together, the worry is a higher chance of bleeding, things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or more serious internal bleeding.

I want to be honest, though: this bleeding concern with horny goat weed has only been seen in test tubes and animals, never confirmed in people. Still, because defibrotide is a serious IV medicine, this isn't something to mix on your own. Please tell your transplant team or pharmacist about any supplement before using it.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Defitelio

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
