Here's the short version: valsartan (Diovan) already works to lower your blood pressure, and horny goat weed might nudge it down a little further. The concern is mostly additive, meaning two blood-pressure-lowering effects stacking on top of each other. If your pressure dips too low, you could feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or a bit woozy when you stand up quickly.

Now the reassuring part: this is based only on lab and animal research. A blood-pressure-lowering effect from this herb has not actually been reported in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since both could pull in the same direction, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it, and don't change your valsartan on your own.

What Is Valsartan Used For?

Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan

Valsartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have a weakened heart muscle. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (other brands) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.
