Humann Superbeets Heart Chews and Fluphenazine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates

Why this applies to Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine falls under Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates — the group Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP2D6 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's crucial to highlight that, as of now, there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for fluphenazine. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to break this medication down. The grape seed extract in these chews (about 150mg per two-chew serving) might slow that enzyme a little, based only on lab-dish studies. In theory, that could let fluphenazine build up a touch, which could nudge up its usual side effects, things like drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure, dry mouth, or muscle stiffness and restlessness.

That said, this is a very weak, theoretical concern. There are no real-world reports of it actually happening in people, and it's rated minor and unlikely. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since the beet content can also lower blood pressure, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before adding these chews.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

“Take real care with supplements while on fluphenazine (Prolixin), an antipsychotic used mainly for schizophrenia. Five of the 148 ingredients on file rate major: herbs like henbane that stack anticholinergic side effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, confusion) onto a drug already prone to them, two rauwolfia plants that can intensify it…”
