Humann Superbeets Heart Chews and Torsemide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

Antihypertensive Drugs

Why this applies to Torsemide

Torsemide falls under Antihypertensive Drugs — the group Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 500mg of beetroot powder (2 chews). Beetroot is rich in nitrates, which have the potential to widen blood vessels (vasodilation) and, in turn, possibly lower blood pressure. While there is a theoretical concern about the nitrate content in beets causing a blood pressure drop, research consistently indicates that any impact is generally minor and short-lived. However, it's crucial to be aware that blood pressure medications alone can cause dizziness and lightheadedness. Combining them with beet supplements might heighten the risk of experiencing these side effects due to the temporary vasodilation caused by the nitrates in beet.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence A

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Torsemide is a strong water pill that helps your body shed extra fluid and brings your blood pressure down. The beetroot in SuperBeets Heart Chews provides nitrates, which can gently relax and widen your blood vessels. Stack those two together and the blood-pressure-lowering effects can add up a little, so you might feel more dizzy, lightheaded, or wobbly, especially when you stand up quickly.

The good news is this overlap is rated minor, and studies show the dip from beets is usually small and short-lived. Most people do fine. Still, if you already run on the low side or get lightheaded easily, mention these chews to your pharmacist or doctor before adding them, and stand up slowly until you know how you feel.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Torsemide page

“Torsemide (Demadex, Soaanz) is a water pill for fluid buildup from heart failure, kidney disease, or liver disease, and its supplement list earns genuine caution, with 10 of the 251 flagged ingredients rated major. Most entries either pile onto its blood-pressure-lowering effect or add extra diuretic action that can pull your potassium…”
