Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Claritin D contains pseudoephedrine, a decongestant that's already a stimulant. Guayusa tea brings its own kick because it's loaded with caffeine. Stack the two and you're essentially doubling up on the get-up-and-go, which can leave you feeling jittery, anxious, or restless. You might notice a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or a bump in your blood pressure.

This is a theoretical concern based on expert opinion, not hard studies, so it's not an emergency. An occasional cup probably won't cause trouble for most people. But if you have heart issues, high blood pressure, or you feel wired, that's worth mentioning. Chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them regularly.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Loratadine, Pseudoephedrine page

“Claritin D pairs an antihistamine with pseudoephedrine, a decongestant that raises heart rate and blood pressure, and that stimulant half is why I would want anyone taking it to read this page carefully before adding a supplement. The largest cluster of interactions changes how the body clears the medication: grapefruit slows the break…”

About Ilex Guayusa

What is Ilex Guayusa?

  • Energy and alertness
  • Mental focus
  • Antioxidant support
  • Appetite control
  • Athletic and physical performance

Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.
