ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Ilex Guayusa interacts with.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, caffeine in Ilex guayusa might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans. There is some evidence that caffeinated coffee might increase the fibrinolytic activity in blood.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the gist with guayusa and ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is an NSAID, and on its own it can already make your blood a little slower to clot (that's why heavy or long-term use sometimes leads to bruising or stomach irritation). Guayusa is basically a caffeine-rich tea, and caffeine has been reported in lab settings to mildly nudge platelets in that same direction. Put them together and, in theory, you could see a slightly higher chance of bleeding or stomach upset.
I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based on how caffeine behaves, not something that's actually been seen happening in people. A normal cup or two of guayusa with an occasional ibuprofen is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you take ibuprofen regularly or notice easy bruising, dark stools, or stomach pain, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ibuprofen page
“Most people treat ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) as an everyday pain reliever, which is exactly why this list of 286 interacting supplements deserves real attention rather than a shrug. About Ilex Guayusa
What is Ilex Guayusa?
- Energy and alertness
- Mental focus
- Antioxidant support
- Appetite control
- Athletic and physical performance
Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.
