Selegiline falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Ilex Guayusa interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of a hypertensive crisis.
Ilex guayusa can contain caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis.

Selegiline is an MAO inhibitor, so it slows the breakdown of certain brain chemicals and substances in your body. When you add a caffeine source like guayusa tea, the concern is mostly about the caffeine itself. In lab studies, caffeine can lightly block MAO too, and combining a stimulant load with an MAO inhibitor could theoretically nudge your blood pressure up, sometimes sharply. That's why this pairing carries a warning about a possible spike in pressure.

Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on pharmacology, not strong human proof, and an occasional cup is very different from concentrated, high-dose guayusa supplements. Still, watch for a pounding headache, racing heart, or feeling flushed. Before brewing this regularly, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Selegiline Used For?

Brand names: Carbex, Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar

Selegiline is used as an add-on treatment for people with Parkinson's disease who are already taking levodopa/carbidopa but are finding that the medication's effects are wearing off or becoming less reliable. It is not used alone — it only works as part of a combination approach.

In clinical studies, adding selegiline helped reduce the amount of daily levodopa needed, cut down on "off" time (periods when symptoms break through), and improved things like tremor, speech, movement, and overall daily function.
