Minor

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin determir

Insulin determir falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Ilex Guayusa interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Ilex guayusa with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research in a model of hyperglycemia suggests that Ilex guayusa may have antihyperglycemic effects, although it does not appear to lower glucose levels when compared with baseline. This effect has not been evaluated in humans.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: Levemir (insulin detemir) is your long-acting insulin that steadily lowers blood sugar through the day. The thought on file is that guayusa might add a small extra blood-sugar-lowering nudge, which could in theory raise your odds of going too low (hypoglycemia). That can show up as shakiness, sweating, a fast heartbeat, confusion, or feeling lightheaded.

That said, this concern is theoretical and comes only from animal research, where guayusa didn't even clearly lower sugar below baseline. There's no human proof of a real interaction, and a normal cup of guayusa tea is very unlikely to throw off your insulin. Still, if you check your sugars, keep an eye out for low readings, and chat with your pharmacist or doctor before making any changes.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin determir page

“Anyone using insulin detemir (Levemir) should treat this list with real caution, because nearly every one of the 242 ingredients on it acts on blood sugar, and most stack extra glucose-lowering on top of the insulin you already inject. About Ilex Guayusa

What is Ilex Guayusa?

  • Energy and alertness
  • Mental focus
  • Antioxidant support
  • Appetite control
  • Athletic and physical performance

Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.
