Methyclothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Ilex Guayusa interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.

Here's the connection worth knowing. Methyclothiazide is a thiazide-type water pill, and one of its known quirks is that it can flush potassium out along with the extra fluid and salt. Guayusa tea brings caffeine to the table, and caffeine can nudge potassium lower too by pushing it into your cells. Stack the two and, in theory, your potassium could dip a bit further than either would cause alone.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not strong proof from studies. A cup or two of guayusa is unlikely to be a big deal for most folks, but low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, tiredness, or an irregular heartbeat. If you notice those, or you drink it daily, check in with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your potassium.

What Is Methyclothiazide Used For?

  • Methyclothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure. Methyclothiazide is also used to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidney, and liver disease and to treat edema caused by using certain medications including estrogen and corticosteroids. Methyclothiazide is in a class of medications called diuretics ('water pills'). It works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
