Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, caffeine in Ilex guayusa might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans. There is some evidence that caffeinated coffee might increase the fibrinolytic activity in blood.

Here's the situation with guayusa tea and your warfarin. Guayusa is basically a caffeinated tea, and caffeine has been reported in lab settings to make platelets a little less sticky. Since warfarin already thins your blood, the worry on paper is that the two together could nudge your bleeding risk up a touch. That might show up as easier bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums.

The honest truth is this is a theoretical concern based on how caffeine behaves, not something actually seen in people drinking it. A cup or two of guayusa is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, warfarin is a finicky drug where small shifts matter, so keep your intake steady rather than going up and down, and mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before making it a daily habit.

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand name: Warfarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
