Kiwi and Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone

Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Kiwi interacts with.

Clinical research suggests that kiwi inhibits platelet aggregation. Theoretically, kiwi might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The piece of your Damason-P combo that matters here is the aspirin. Aspirin already thins the blood a bit by keeping platelets from clumping together. Kiwi has been shown in some research to do a mild version of the same thing. Put them together and, in theory, you could nudge up your bleeding risk a little. That might look like easier bruising, a nosebleed that takes longer to stop, or bleeding gums.

Now, here is the reassuring part: this is a theoretical concern based on how kiwi behaves, not strong proof of real harm. Eating a kiwi or two as food is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you take concentrated kiwi supplements or eat large amounts daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.
