Kiwi and Aspirin, Pentazocine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Pentazocine

Aspirin, Pentazocine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Kiwi interacts with.

Clinical research suggests that kiwi inhibits platelet aggregation. Theoretically, kiwi might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Talwin Compound combines aspirin with pentazocine. The part that matters here is the aspirin, which is a blood thinner of sorts. It keeps your platelets (the tiny cells that help form clots) from clumping together. Kiwi has been shown in some studies to do a similar thing on its own.

So the concern is simple: two things that both make clotting a little slower could, in theory, add up and raise your bleeding risk. That might look like easier bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach upset and bleeding (aspirin is already hard on the stomach). To be clear, this is a theoretical worry based on how kiwi behaves, not strong proof, and a normal serving of kiwi as food is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, mention regular kiwi habits to your pharmacist or doctor, especially before any procedure.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Pentazocine page

“Talwin Compound pairs pentazocine, an opioid painkiller, with aspirin, and I read its supplement list with more concern than most. The great majority of entries do one of two things: raise the bleeding risk that aspirin already carries, or deepen the sedation pentazocine causes.”
