Kiwi and Hydrochlorothiazide, Moexipril

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Hydrochlorothiazide, Moexipril

Hydrochlorothiazide, Moexipril falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Kiwi interacts with.

Clinical research suggests that consuming kiwi reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive individuals. Theoretically, concomitant use of kiwi and antihypertensive drugs may increase the risk of hypotension when used in combination with drugs that lower blood pressure. These include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Uniretic combines two blood pressure medicines: hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill) and moexipril (an ACE inhibitor). Here's the thing about kiwi: some research suggests eating it may gently nudge your blood pressure down on its own. So when you pair kiwi with a medication that's already lowering your pressure, the two could add up.

To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how things work, not something well documented. A serving of kiwi as a snack is very unlikely to cause trouble. But if you were eating large amounts daily, your pressure could dip a little lower, which might bring on dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint, especially when standing up. If you notice that, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor rather than changing anything yourself.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Hydrochlorothiazide, Moexipril page

“Uniretic pairs hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill, with moexipril, an ACE inhibitor, so it lowers blood pressure two ways at once, and that combination earns real caution with supplements. Of the 248 herbs and supplements with an interaction on file, 16 rate major, and those are the ones to understand first.”
