Why this applies to Dextroamphetamine

Dextroamphetamine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Kratom interacts with.

Theoretically, kratom might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research suggests that kratom extract inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity. However, human research shows that a single low dose of kratom tea 2 grams does not inhibit CYP2D6 activity. However, this kratom dose is lower than what is normally taken for psychoactive effects. In one case report, a 63-year-old male presented with possible serotonin syndrome after taking an unknown dose of kratom for up to 3 months along with serotonergic prescription medications bupropion, buspirone, desvenlafaxine, trazodone, and ziprasidone. It was hypothesized that kratom inhibited CYP2D6-mediated metabolism of buspirone and consequently increased systemic exposure to serotonin. In another case, a 37-year-old male stable for 15 years on amitriptyline presented with anticholinergic symptoms including xerostomia, dry eyes, and constipation, along with mildly elevated bilirubin and liver enzymes after taking progressively higher doses of up to 14 grams of kratom daily for 12 weeks. It was hypothesized that the adverse effects of amitriptyline were precipitated by CYP2D6 inhibition by kratom.

Here's the gist for Dexedrine: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear dextroamphetamine out of your system. Lab studies hint that kratom can slow that enzyme down. If it does, your dextroamphetamine could hang around longer and feel stronger than expected. That might mean a faster or pounding heartbeat, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or feeling wound up and anxious.

I want to be honest that this is mostly a theory based on test-tube data, and one small human study using a low dose of kratom tea didn't actually block CYP2D6. Still, the doses people take for kratom's effects are much higher. Since both kratom and this stimulant rev up the body, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Dextroamphetamine also falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS.

Theoretically, taking kratom in combination with serotonergic drugs may increase levels of serotonin, increasing the risk of serotonin syndrome.
A 63-year-old male presented with possible serotonin syndrome after taking an unknown dose of kratom for up to 3 months along with serotonergic prescription medications bupropion, buspirone, desvenlafaxine, trazodone, and ziprasidone. It was hypothesized that kratom inhibited the cytochrome P450 3A4-, 2C9-, 2D6-, and 1A2-mediated metabolism of several of these serotonergic medications, consequently increasing systemic exposure to serotonin.

Here's the gist when it comes to Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine) and kratom. Both can nudge up serotonin and other brain chemicals, so combining them may raise the small chance of serotonin syndrome. That can look like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shaking, muscle twitching, or feeling overheated. Kratom itself also has stimulant-like effects, so stacking it with a stimulant could add jitteriness, anxiety, high blood pressure, or trouble sleeping.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is largely theoretical and based on a single case report involving different medications, so it's a possible concern, not a proven one. Still, kratom carries real risks on its own. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

What Is Dextroamphetamine Used For?

Brand name: Dexedrine

Dextroamphetamine treats two conditions: ADHD and narcolepsy (a sleep disorder causing uncontrollable daytime sleepiness). It is available in multiple forms — tablets, extended-release capsules, oral solution, and a skin patch — and the approved age ranges vary by product.

Oral tablets (Zenzedi, generic) and oral solutions (Procentra, generic) are approved for ADHD in children as young as 3 years old and for narcolepsy. Extended-release capsules (Dexedrine, generic) are approved for ADHD in children ages 6 to 16 and for narcolepsy. Xelstrym, the transdermal patch, is approved only for ADHD — in adults and children ages 6 and older — and is not indicated for narcolepsy.
