Here's the simple version: you're taking olmesartan (Benicar) to bring your blood pressure down, but the glycyrrhizin in regular licorice tends to push blood pressure up. It does this by making your body hold onto salt and water and lose potassium. So licorice can work against your medication, and you might see your numbers creep back up even though you haven't changed your dose.

This effect is dose-related. Small culinary amounts or true DGL licorice (where the glycyrrhizin is removed) are much less likely to be a problem. But concentrated licorice supplements or eating a lot of real licorice candy over time can matter. Before adding licorice, check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially since you already have high blood pressure.

Licorice root is a traditional remedy used for sore throats, coughs, and digestive complaints, but solid human evidence is limited for most uses. Regular licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which can raise blood pressure and lower potassium when taken in large amounts or for a long time, so deglycyrrhizinated (DGL) products are often preferred. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart, or kidney problems.

What Is Olmesartan Used For?

Brand names: Olmesartan Medoxomil, Benicar

Olmesartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children aged 6 years and older. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like stroke and heart attack.

It is available as Benicar and as generic olmesartan medoxomil tablets, including a combination tablet with hydrochlorothiazide. All of these products are used for high blood pressure.
