Lion's Mane Mushroom and Iloprost

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Iloprost

Iloprost falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Lion's Mane Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, lion's mane mushroom may increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research suggests that lion's mane mushroom extracts can inhibit platelet aggregation.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with iloprost (Ventavis): besides relaxing blood vessels in your lungs, it also makes your platelets a little less sticky, so on its own it can nudge up your bleeding risk. Lion's mane may work in a similar direction. In lab dish studies, lion's mane extracts slowed platelet clumping, so stacking the two could, in theory, make bleeding or easy bruising a bit more likely.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how things work in a test tube, not from real patient reports, so I don't want you to panic. Still, watch for signs like nosebleeds, bleeding gums, unusual bruising, or cuts that take a while to stop. Please run lion's mane by your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
