Lychee and Ofatumumab

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Ofatumumab

Ofatumumab falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Lychee interacts with.

Theoretically, lychee might reduce the effectiveness of immunosuppressant drugs.
In vitro, flavonoids extracted from lychee show immunostimulant effects. So far, this effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with lychee and Kesimpta (ofatumumab). Ofatumumab is an antibody that works by lowering certain immune cells (B cells) to calm the immune attacks that drive MS relapses. In lab dishes, some flavonoids from lychee have shown mild immune-stimulating activity. The worry, in theory, is that revving up the immune system could work against a medicine whose whole job is to quiet it down.

I want to be honest, though: this is theoretical only, based on test-tube data, and it has never actually been seen in people. Enjoying lychee as a fruit is very unlikely to interfere with your treatment. Concentrated lychee extract supplements are a bigger unknown, so I'd run those by your pharmacist or MS doctor before starting them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ofatumumab page

“Kesimpta (ofatumumab) treats multiple sclerosis by deliberately quieting part of the immune system, and all 53 supplements on this page raise the same worry from the opposite direction. Each is thought to stimulate immune activity, which could in theory blunt what the drug is trying to do.”

About Lychee

What is Lychee?

  • General nutrition and antioxidant support
  • Digestive complaints (traditional use)
  • Cough and sore throat (traditional use)
  • Blood sugar support (preliminary)
  • Weight and metabolic support (preliminary)

Lychee is a sweet tropical fruit that is nutritious and a source of vitamin C and antioxidant plant compounds. While the fruit is a healthy food for most people, supplement-strength extracts have only limited research behind specific health claims, and eating large amounts of unripe lychee on an empty stomach has been linked to dangerous low blood sugar in undernourished children. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using lychee extracts for any health condition.

About Ofatumumab Injection (Multiple Sclerosis)

What Is Ofatumumab Injection (Multiple Sclerosis) Used For?

Brand name: Kesimpta

Kesimpta is used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults. This includes clinically isolated syndrome (a first MS episode), relapsing-remitting MS (the most common form, with flares followed by recovery periods), and active secondary progressive MS (when the disease slowly worsens but still has active flares).

It is designed to reduce relapses and slow disease activity by targeting certain immune cells believed to drive MS damage.
