Lychee and Tobutamide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Tobutamide

Tobutamide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Lychee interacts with.

Theoretically, lychee seed might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that an aqueous extract of lychee seed reduces fasting and 2-hour postprandial blood glucose and improves impaired glucose tolerance in rats with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, retrospective research in children has found an association between lychee consumption and increased odds of acute hypoglycemic encephalopathy.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Tolbutamide (Mobenol) is an older sulfonylurea that lowers your blood sugar by nudging your body to release more insulin. The concern here is simple addition: lychee, especially concentrated seed extracts, may have its own mild blood-sugar-lowering effect. Stack that on top of tolbutamide and your sugar could dip lower than intended.

If that happens, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, hungry, or confused, the usual signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). That said, this warning is theoretical, based mostly on animal studies and reports in undernourished kids, not solid human trials. Enjoying lychee fruit as a snack is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated extracts are the bigger question. Before trying any lychee supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Tobutamide page

“Long as this list is, it mostly tells one story, and with Tobutamide (Mobenol), a sulfonylurea that lowers blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, that story deserves genuine care. Most of the 215 moderate entries add to the drug's effect and invite hypoglycemia, the shaky, sweaty, sometimes dangerous low.”

About Lychee

What is Lychee?

  • General nutrition and antioxidant support
  • Digestive complaints (traditional use)
  • Cough and sore throat (traditional use)
  • Blood sugar support (preliminary)
  • Weight and metabolic support (preliminary)

Lychee is a sweet tropical fruit that is nutritious and a source of vitamin C and antioxidant plant compounds. While the fruit is a healthy food for most people, supplement-strength extracts have only limited research behind specific health claims, and eating large amounts of unripe lychee on an empty stomach has been linked to dangerous low blood sugar in undernourished children. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using lychee extracts for any health condition.
