Why this applies to Phenobarbital, Sodium Nitrate

Phenobarbital, Sodium Nitrate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Several volatile oils in mace, such as methyleugenol, isoeugenol, safrole, myristicin, 1,8-cineole, and geranyl acetate, seem to have sedative effects. Evidence from animal research suggests that methyleugenol can induce anesthesia for a similar duration as pentobarbital. Due to the sedative effects of certain mace constituents, taking medicinal amounts of mace in combination with other CNS depressants may have additive effects. However, evidence from other animal research suggests that myristicin can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Until more is known, use medicinal amounts of mace cautiously in combination with CNS depressants. Some CNS depressants include clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others.

Phenobarbital is a barbiturate that calms the brain and nervous system. The thinking here is pretty simple: some of the aromatic oils in mace (like myristicin and methyleugenol) appear to have their own mild sedating effects in lab animals. Stack that on top of phenobarbital and you could, in theory, feel extra drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or unsteady. With higher doses, slowed breathing is the bigger worry with any barbiturate.

I'll be honest with you, this is theoretical and based on animal studies, not human cases. Interestingly, one study even hinted mace might shorten phenobarbital's effect, so the science isn't settled. Mace sprinkled on your food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated mace supplements are the real question, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before using them.

Evidence from animal research suggests that myristicin, a constituent of mace, can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Theoretically, concomitant use may decrease the therapeutic effects of phenobarbital.

Here's the gist with your phenobarbital. Mace contains a compound called myristicin, and in animal studies it appeared to shorten how long phenobarbital kept rats asleep. The thinking is that mace might rev up the liver enzymes that break phenobarbital down, so the drug could clear a bit faster and work a little less well. With a seizure or sleep medication, weaker effects could mean less seizure control or less of the calming effect you count on.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical and based only on lab animals, not people. Normal cooking amounts of mace are very unlikely to matter. The concern would be concentrated mace supplements. Phenobarbital is a sensitive drug, so before adding any mace supplement, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.
