Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
WARFARIN (Coumadin)
In a case report, a patient previously stabilized on warfarin developed an elevated international normalized ratio (INR) of 5.1 after taking maitake mushroom (Grifron-Pro Maitake D-Fraction) 1 drop/kg daily in three divided doses for one week. The elevated INR resolved after holding warfarin for two days, then reducing the dose by 11%. It is thought that the beta-glucan constituent of maitake mushroom might cause warfarin dissociation from proteins, resulting in increased free warfarin levels and increased warfarin effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: warfarin is a finely tuned blood thinner, and we use a blood test called the INR to make sure it's keeping you in just the right range. There's a single case report where someone stable on warfarin added a concentrated maitake mushroom product (the D-fraction drops) and their INR jumped to 5.1, which is higher than we want and raises the risk of bruising and bleeding. The thinking is that maitake may bump warfarin off the proteins it normally rides on, leaving more active drug floating free.
Now, this is anecdotal evidence from one person, so it's far from proven, and eating maitake as a food is much less concerning than taking concentrated capsules or drops. Still, because warfarin leaves so little room for error, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before starting or stopping any maitake supplement so they can keep an eye on your INR.

About Maitake Mushroom
What is Maitake Mushroom?
- Immune support
- Blood sugar support in diabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- General wellness and antioxidant support
Maitake is an edible mushroom long used as food and in traditional Japanese medicine, and it is being studied for possible immune, blood sugar, and blood pressure effects. The human evidence is still limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. It is generally well tolerated as food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
About Warfarin
What Is Warfarin Used For?
Brand name: Warfarin
Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.
In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
