Drug & supplement interaction

Neem + Adefovir

Adefovir brand name: Hepsera.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Neem and Adefovir in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Neem and Adefovir

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Adefovir and Neem in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Neem safety at a glance

Neem overall Use caution Leaf preparations are likely safe short-term for most adults, but neem oil and seed extracts can be toxic if swallowed.
Pregnancy Likely Unsafe When neem oil or leaf is used orally. Neem oil and leaf have been used as abortifacients. Read the full pregnancy detail
Breastfeeding Avoid There is not enough reliable safety information, so it is best avoided while breastfeeding.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding ratings are from Natural Medicines (Therapeutic Research Center) — the full detail is in the Special populations card below. Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Adefovir

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Adefovir is filed under 4 classifications — including nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (nrtis), organic anion transporter 1 (oat1) substrates, nephrotoxic drugs. Neem has documented interactions with 7 drug classes — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate), cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates (moderate) and cytochrome p450 2c8 (cyp2c8) substrates (moderate) — and none of Adefovir’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Neem and Adefovir May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. 2 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

About Neem

What is Neem?

Neem
  • Skin conditions
  • Dental and gum health
  • Antimicrobial and antiparasitic
  • Digestive upset
  • Blood sugar support
  • Insect repellent/pesticide

Neem is a tree from India used for centuries in traditional medicine, especially for skin, dental, and antimicrobial purposes. Some small studies are promising for oral health and skin, but high-quality human evidence is limited for most uses. Neem oil and seed extracts can be toxic if swallowed, especially in children, so use with caution and talk to your pharmacist or doctor first.

Azadirachta indica · Meliaceae · Leaves, seeds (and seed oil), bark, and twigs · Capsules, leaf powder, leaf extract, tea, topical oil, toothpaste, mouth rinse, and soap

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Neem is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Neem record says about it on its own.

Neem: dosing

There is no well-established standard dose for neem, and products vary widely in strength and form. Because of this, the safest approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed the recommended amount.Topical products (like creams, soaps, and oils for the skin) and oral neem leaf supplements are used differently, so do not assume one form's instructions apply to another.

About Adefovir

What Is Adefovir Used For?

Brand name: Hepsera

Adefovir Dipivoxil Tablets and Hepsera are used to treat chronic hepatitis B — a long-term liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) — in patients 12 years of age and older who have signs of active viral replication and either persistently elevated liver enzymes or active liver disease confirmed on biopsy.

The indication covers adults with both HBeAg-positive and HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B, including those with lamivudine-resistant hepatitis B virus. In adolescents aged 12 to less than 18, the approval is based on virological and biochemical responses in HBeAg-positive patients with compensated (still-functioning) liver disease.
