Why this applies to Naproxen

Naproxen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Neem interacts with.

Theoretically, neem leaf extract might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that neem leaf extract inhibits CYP1A2 enzymes. So far, this reaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: in lab studies, neem leaf extract seems to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the helpers your body uses to break down naproxen. If that enzyme works more slowly, naproxen could hang around a bit longer and build up. In theory, that might nudge up its usual side effects, things like stomach upset, heartburn, an upset gut, fluid retention, or higher blood pressure.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube work, and nothing like it has actually been reported in real people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but I also wouldn't ignore it. If you take naproxen regularly and want to add a neem supplement, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Theoretically, neem leaf extract might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that neem leaf methanol extract inhibits CYP2C9 enzymes. So far, this reaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to break down naproxen and clear it out. In test-tube studies, neem leaf extract seems to slow that enzyme down. If that were to happen in real life, naproxen could linger longer and build up, which might mean stronger effects and a higher chance of the usual naproxen side effects, like stomach upset, heartburn, stomach bleeding, fluid retention, or higher blood pressure.

The honest part: this is only a theoretical concern from lab research, and it hasn't actually been reported in people. Food-style amounts are unlikely to matter much, but concentrated neem supplements are a bigger question mark. If you take both regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Naproxen

What Is Naproxen Used For?

Brand names: Naprosyn, Naprelan, Anaprox, Anaprox DS, Naproxyn, Navalbine, Naproxen, Naprosyn EC, Napro-Na, Aleve, Arthroxen, Synflex, EC-Naprosyn

Naproxen tablets, naproxen sodium tablets, and naproxen oral suspension are used to relieve the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. They are also used for tendonitis, bursitis, and acute gout, and for managing pain and primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps).

Naproxen Sodium Controlled-Release Tablets are indicated for the same conditions plus the relief of mild to moderate pain. Several over-the-counter naproxen sodium products are indicated for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains from headache, backache, muscular aches, toothache, menstrual cramps, minor arthritis pain, and the common cold, and to temporarily reduce fever.
