Bacopa and Naproxen

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Bacopa interacts with whole categories of medication. Naproxen falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Bacopa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Naproxen

Naproxen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Bacopa interacts with.

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP1A2 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence shows that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP1A2, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: lab studies suggest bacopa might slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear naproxen. If that enzyme runs slower, naproxen could hang around a bit longer and build up. In theory that means a stronger chance of the usual naproxen side effects, like stomach upset, heartburn, or in some cases stomach irritation or bleeding.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is, though. It comes from test-tube and animal research, and even those studies disagree with each other. We have no real-world reports of this being a problem in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but if you take both regularly, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and watch for any new tummy trouble.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Naproxen also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
Research on the effect of bacopa extracts on CYP2C9 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C9, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for naproxen and bacopa. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to break down naproxen. In test tube studies, bacopa may slow that enzyme down a little. If that happened in your body, naproxen could build up slightly and you might notice more of its usual side effects, like stomach upset, heartburn, or a higher chance of stomach irritation.

The good news: this is only a theoretical concern from lab work, and other studies suggest bacopa probably doesn't affect this enzyme enough to matter. Naproxen isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't flip the other way. Still, if you take both regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if your stomach feels off.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).

About Bacopa

What is Bacopa?

Bacopa
  • Memory and cognitive support
  • Anxiety and stress
  • ADHD symptoms
  • Age-related memory decline
  • General brain health

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
