Bacopa and Menotropins

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

THYROID HORMONE

Why this applies to Menotropins

Menotropins falls under THYROID HORMONE — the group Bacopa interacts with.

Theoretically, bacopa might have additive effects when used with thyroid hormone.
Animal research suggests that bacopa increases thyroxine (T4) levels in mice by about 40%.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest answer: the interaction we have on file actually applies to thyroid hormone medications, not to Menotropins. Menotropins (Repronex, Menopur) are injectable fertility hormones, FSH and LH, used to stimulate the ovaries during fertility treatment. They don't work through your thyroid, so the bacopa-thyroid concern doesn't really translate over to this drug.

The note about bacopa possibly nudging up thyroid (T4) levels comes only from a mouse study, so it's theoretical even for true thyroid drugs. With Menotropins, I wouldn't expect bacopa to change how your fertility injections work. Still, fertility cycles are carefully timed and monitored, so before adding any new supplement, please run it by the doctor or clinic managing your treatment.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Menotropins page

“If you are using menotropins (Menopur, Repronex) for fertility treatment, I would hold off on every one of the 21 supplements on this page until your prescriber weighs in. All of them touch thyroid hormone activity in one direction or the other, and steady thyroid function matters when you are trying to get a cycle to succeed.”

About Bacopa

What is Bacopa?

Bacopa
  • Memory and cognitive support
  • Anxiety and stress
  • ADHD symptoms
  • Age-related memory decline
  • General brain health

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
