Here's the gist for diazepam (Valium). Lab studies suggest bacopa might mildly slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways that helps clear certain medicines. If that happened with diazepam, the drug could linger a bit longer in your system, which in theory might add to its usual effects like drowsiness, dizziness, slowed reflexes, or feeling foggy.

I want to be honest, though: this is very theoretical. The evidence comes only from test-tube and animal research, and even those results conflict. Diazepam is mostly handled by other enzymes (CYP2C19 and CYP3A4), so a CYP1A2 effect may not matter much in real life. Still, if you notice extra sleepiness, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
