Oxybutynin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bacopa interacts with.

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Here's the gist for these two together. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear oxybutynin out of your system. In lab dishes, bacopa has shown a possible ability to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in a real person, oxybutynin could linger a little longer and its anticholinergic effects could feel stronger, think dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, dizziness, or trouble emptying your bladder.

I want to be honest about the strength here, though. This is theoretical, based only on test-tube studies, and the data even conflict with each other. For most people taking normal supplement amounts, this likely won't cause a noticeable problem. Still, if you take both and notice those side effects creeping up, loop in your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Theoretically, concurrent use might decrease the effectiveness of both agents.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels, which could counteract the effects of anticholinergic drugs. Similarly, anticholinergic drugs might counteract the cholinergic effects of bacopa.

Here's the basic idea with these two together. Oxybutynin calms an overactive bladder by blocking acetylcholine, the chemical messenger that tells your bladder muscle to squeeze. Bacopa appears to nudge things in the opposite direction by raising acetylcholine levels. So in theory, taking them together could blunt each other a bit, meaning your oxybutynin might not control urgency, frequency, or leaks quite as well.

I want to be straight with you though: this is a theoretical concern based on how each works in the lab, not something proven in real patients. Many people may notice nothing at all. If you take regular bacopa supplements (not just an occasional dose) and feel your bladder symptoms creeping back, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can help you sort it out.

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.

About Oxybutynin

What Is Oxybutynin Used For?

Brand names: Ditropan, Ditropan XL, Oxybutynin, Oxytrol, Anturol, Gelnique

Oxybutynin treats overactive bladder — including the sudden urge to urinate, leaking before you can reach the bathroom (urge incontinence), and going too frequently. Extended-release tablets (Oxybutynin Chloride) and immediate-release tablets and oral solution (Oxybutynin Chloride) are used for these symptoms. Oxytrol is approved for overactive bladder in men; Oxytrol for Women is approved for overactive bladder in women aged 18 and older.

Extended-release tablets (Oxybutynin Chloride) are also approved for children 6 years and older who have bladder overactivity caused by a neurological condition, such as spina bifida. Immediate-release tablets and oral solution (Oxybutynin Chloride) are indicated for bladder instability symptoms — including urgency, frequency, urinary leakage, and painful urination — in patients with neurogenic bladder conditions.
