Why this applies to Dronabinol

Dronabinol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Neem interacts with.

Theoretically, neem leaf extract might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that neem leaf methanol extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. So far, this reaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down dronabinol (Marinol, Syndros). In lab dish studies, neem leaf extract appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, dronabinol could clear more slowly and build up, which might mean more of its usual effects, things like dizziness, drowsiness, a fast or pounding heartbeat, feeling foggy or anxious, or a stronger 'high.'

The important part: this is only a theory based on test-tube research, and it hasn't actually been seen in people. So I wouldn't panic. Still, since both can make you sleepy, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially with concentrated neem supplements rather than small culinary amounts.

What Is Dronabinol Used For?

Brand names: Marinol, Syndros

Dronabinol — available as capsules (Marinol, Dronabinol) and as an oral solution (Syndros, Dronabinol oral solution) — is approved for two conditions in adults. First, it treats anorexia (severely reduced appetite) associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS. Second, it controls nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy in patients who have not gotten enough relief from standard anti-nausea treatments.

Both uses apply to all available formulations, but dosing timing and meal instructions differ between the capsule and oral solution products. Always follow the specific instructions for the product you have been prescribed.
