Octopamine and Chlorpheniramine, Phenylephrine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

STIMULANT DRUGS

Why this applies to Chlorpheniramine, Phenylephrine

Chlorpheniramine, Phenylephrine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Octopamine interacts with.

Octopamine is thought to have stimulant effects. Theoretically, taking octopamine with other stimulant drugs might increase the risk of hypertension and adverse cardiovascular effects.
Some stimulant drugs include amphetamine, caffeine, diethylpropion (Tenuate), methylphenidate, phentermine (Ionamin), pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, others), and many others.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The part to pay attention to here is the phenylephrine in this combo. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that works a lot like your body's own adrenaline, gently tightening blood vessels to clear a stuffy nose. Octopamine is a stimulant-like compound that nudges those same adrenaline-type receptors. So on paper, stacking the two could add up and slightly raise the odds of higher blood pressure, a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, or trouble sleeping. The chlorpheniramine (an antihistamine) isn't the concern here.

Keep in mind this is a theoretical caution based on how these compounds behave, not strong human studies, and it's rated minor. Neither is a prodrug, so the worry is simply two stimulant effects layering. If you have heart issues or high blood pressure, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Chlorpheniramine, Phenylephrine page

“A medicine that stimulates the heart and dries the body doesn't leave much room for supplements pulling the same way, and that describes chlorpheniramine, phenylephrine (Histatab Plus, Ed A Hist, Rynatan) well. Dozens of stimulant herbs, everyday caffeine sources among them, add to the decongestant's strain on blood pressure and heart…”

About Octopamine

What is Octopamine?

  • Weight loss and fat burning
  • Boosting energy
  • Athletic performance
  • Appetite suppression

Octopamine is a stimulant-like compound found in small amounts in some plants (such as bitter orange) and made naturally in the body. It is marketed mostly in weight-loss and sports supplements, but human evidence that it actually helps with fat loss or performance is very limited. Because it can affect the heart and blood pressure and is banned in some sports, talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it.
