Octopamine and Nebivolol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Nebivolol

Nebivolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Octopamine interacts with.

In humans, octopamine 450-600 mg daily increases blood pressure in hypotensive patients. However, evidence from animal research suggests that octopamine can lower blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of octopamine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate and/or reduce the activity of antihypertensive drugs.
Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about pairing octopamine with Bystolic (nebivolol): octopamine is a stimulant-like compound that behaves a bit like adrenaline, so it can nudge your blood pressure and heart rate up. Nebivolol is working in the opposite direction, relaxing your blood vessels and slowing your heart to bring pressure down. Putting them together could blunt how well your nebivolol controls your blood pressure, meaning your numbers might creep back up.

I'll be honest, the human evidence here is thin and a little mixed, and some animal data even points the other way. Still, since octopamine can affect the heart, I wouldn't combine the two casually. Please don't change your nebivolol on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying any octopamine or bitter orange product.

  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Octopamine

What is Octopamine?

  • Weight loss and fat burning
  • Boosting energy
  • Athletic performance
  • Appetite suppression

Octopamine is a stimulant-like compound found in small amounts in some plants (such as bitter orange) and made naturally in the body. It is marketed mostly in weight-loss and sports supplements, but human evidence that it actually helps with fat loss or performance is very limited. Because it can affect the heart and blood pressure and is banned in some sports, talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it.

About Nebivolol

What Is Nebivolol Used For?

Brand names: Bystolic, Nebilet

Nebivolol tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially stroke and heart attack. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medications.

Managing blood pressure is most effective as part of a broader plan that may include diet changes, exercise, and other treatments your doctor recommends.
