Amphetamine falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Octopamine interacts with.

Octopamine is metabolized by monoamine oxidase. Theoretically, concurrent use of MAOIs with octopamine might increase the effects and side effects of octopamine. Tell patients taking MAOIs to avoid using octopamine. Some MAOIs include phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate), and others.

Here's a wrinkle worth knowing about. The interaction in our database describes octopamine paired with classic MAO inhibitors, since octopamine is broken down by the enzyme monoamine oxidase. Amphetamine isn't a true MAOI, so this isn't a perfect match. That said, amphetamine is a powerful stimulant that boosts your own adrenaline-type chemicals, and octopamine is an adrenaline cousin too. Stacking two stimulant-like compounds can pile on top of each other.

In real life, that could mean a faster or pounding heartbeat, a jump in blood pressure, jitteriness, headache, or trouble sleeping. This is theoretical and based on how these things work, not strong human data, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, since both touch the heart and blood pressure, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than guessing.

Here's the simple version: octopamine acts like a mild stimulant, and your amphetamine (the active ingredient in Dyanavel XR, Mydayis, and similar ADHD medicines) is already a strong stimulant. Stacking two stimulants together can add up, which is why the concern is mainly about your heart and blood pressure. You could notice things like a faster or pounding heartbeat, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, or trouble sleeping.

What Is Amphetamine Used For?

Brand names: Dyanavel XR, Adensys XR-ODT, Mydayis, Adzenys ER

Amphetamine treats Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in patients 6 years and older. Adzenys XR-ODT, Dyanavel XR, and the amphetamine extended-release orally disintegrating tablet formulations are specifically approved for ADHD in this age group.

Amphetamine Sulfate tablets and Evekeo (amphetamine sulfate tablets) are also approved for narcolepsy (a sleep disorder causing uncontrollable daytime sleepiness) and as a short-term aid in a calorie-restricted weight-loss program for exogenous obesity (weight gain from external factors like overeating) in patients who have not responded to other approaches.
