Why this applies to Selegiline

Selegiline falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Octopamine interacts with.

Octopamine is metabolized by monoamine oxidase. Theoretically, concurrent use of MAOIs with octopamine might increase the effects and side effects of octopamine. Tell patients taking MAOIs to avoid using octopamine. Some MAOIs include phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate), and others.

Here's the simple version. Your body normally uses an enzyme called monoamine oxidase to break down octopamine, the stimulant in this supplement. Selegiline blocks that enzyme (that's exactly how it works for Parkinson's). So if you take octopamine while on selegiline, the octopamine isn't cleared as quickly and can pile up, pushing its effects and side effects higher than expected.

In practice that could mean a jump in blood pressure, a racing or pounding heart, headache, sweating, or feeling jittery. Selegiline at higher Parkinson's doses, and especially the Emsam patch, raises this concern. This warning is based on how these drugs behave chemically rather than lots of patient reports, but it's a real one worth respecting. Please don't start octopamine without checking with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Selegiline Used For?

Selegiline is used as an add-on treatment for people with Parkinson's disease who are already taking levodopa/carbidopa but are finding that the medication's effects are wearing off or becoming less reliable. It is not used alone — it only works as part of a combination approach.

In clinical studies, adding selegiline helped reduce the amount of daily levodopa needed, cut down on "off" time (periods when symptoms break through), and improved things like tremor, speech, movement, and overall daily function.
