Gliclazide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Purple Nut Sedge interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that purple nut sedge can reduce blood glucose levels. Theoretically, purple nut sedge might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Here's the gist: gliclazide already lowers your blood sugar by nudging your pancreas to release more insulin. The concern with purple nut sedge is that, at least in animal studies, the plant seemed to lower blood sugar too. Stack the two together and they could add up, pushing your glucose lower than you intended.

If that happens, you might notice the classic signs of a low: shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a racing heart, irritability, or feeling confused. I want to be honest though, this is a theoretical interaction based on lab and animal work, not solid human studies. It may never cause a problem for you. Still, if you're set on trying purple nut sedge, check your blood sugar more often at first and loop in your pharmacist or doctor before starting, since your gliclazide dose might need a look.
