ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Nusinersen Sodium
Nusinersen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Purple Nut Sedge interacts with.
Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the honest picture with Spinraza (nusinersen) and purple nut sedge. The concern on file is about bleeding, because in test-tube studies this herb seemed to make platelets a little less sticky. The thing is, Spinraza isn't a typical blood thinner that gets processed by the liver. It's given as a spinal injection (into the fluid around your spinal cord), and that procedure can carry a small bleeding or bruising risk on its own.
So the realistic worry isn't a chemical clash inside your body, it's that an herb with mild blood-thinning potential could add to bleeding risk around the injection. Keep in mind this is only lab-level evidence, so it's theoretical. Still, please mention any supplements to your care team before your next dose.

“Spinraza (nusinersen) is given by spinal injection to treat spinal muscular atrophy, and it carries its own warnings for low platelets and kidney stress, which makes the 208 supplements on this page worth real vigilance rather than a shrug. All but six of them, 202 ingredients, could raise bleeding risk by thinning the blood or dulling…”
