Rauwolscine and Vincristine Sulfate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS

Why this applies to Vincristine Sulfate

Vincristine Sulfate falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Rauwolscine interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rauwolscine with seizure threshold lowering drugs might increase the risk of adverse convulsant effects.
In animal research, intraperitoneal rauwolscine lowered the seizure threshold level of the drug metrazol.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: both of these can, in their own way, make seizures a little more likely. Vincristine is a chemotherapy drug, and one of its known nervous system side effects is that it can lower the seizure threshold in some people. Rauwolscine, the stimulant in many fat-burner and pre-workout products, may do the same thing. Stack them together and you could, in theory, nudge that risk a bit higher.

I'll be honest with you though, the evidence here is thin. It comes from animal lab studies, not from people taking these two together, so this is more of a caution than a proven problem. Still, while you're on vincristine, please run any stimulant supplement past your oncology team or pharmacist before starting it.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Vincristine Sulfate page

“Chemotherapy leaves little room for error, and vincristine sulfate (Marqibo) is no exception. Nearly everything on this list changes how the body handles the drug through a pathway called CYP3A4, so a supplement can either push vincristine levels high enough to worsen its nerve toxicity or drop them low enough to blunt the cancer treat…”

Rauwolscine (alpha-yohimbine) is a stimulant alkaloid closely related to yohimbine that is marketed mainly in fat-burning and pre-workout supplements. Human evidence for its benefits is very limited, and it can raise heart rate and blood pressure and cause anxiety, so it should be used with caution and is not recommended for people with heart conditions, anxiety, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
