Reishi Mushroom and Danaparoid

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Danaparoid

Danaparoid falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Reishi Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, high doses of reishi mushroom might increase the risk of bleeding.
A dose of 1.5 grams daily of reishi mushroom does not seem to decrease platelet aggregation, but a higher dose of 3 grams daily does.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Danaparoid (Orgaran) is a blood thinner given by injection to prevent dangerous clots. The concern here is simple: reishi may have a mild blood-thinning quality of its own, so pairing it with danaparoid could add up to a higher chance of bleeding. That might show as easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or cuts that take longer to stop.

Keep in mind this is mostly theoretical, based on lab work rather than real patient cases. Interestingly, lower reishi doses (around 1.5 grams a day) didn't seem to affect platelets, while higher doses (about 3 grams daily) might. Since danaparoid is already a serious anticoagulant, please run any reishi supplement by your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Danaparoid page

“Danshen, a Chinese herb sold for heart and circulation, is where I would start with danaparoid (Orgaran), an injectable blood thinner used to prevent and treat dangerous clots. Nearly everything here, 202 of the 218 ingredients on file, carries some blood-thinning or antiplatelet activity of its own, and stacking that on top of an anti…”

About Reishi Mushroom

What is Reishi Mushroom?

Reishi Mushroom
  • Immune support
  • Fatigue and general well-being
  • Stress and sleep
  • Inflammation
  • Heart and cholesterol health

Reishi is a traditional Asian mushroom widely used to support the immune system and overall wellness. Human evidence for most of its claimed benefits is limited or low-quality, so it should not replace proven treatments. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or take other medicines.
