Saffron and Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CAFFEINE

Why this applies to Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine

Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine falls under CAFFEINE — the group Saffron interacts with.

Theoretically, saffron might inhibit the metabolism of caffeine.
A small clinical study suggests that taking saffron powder 300 mg in 150 mL water daily for 5 days and then taking caffeine 200 mg seems to reduce caffeine metabolite levels in the saliva and urine in males, but not females. Theoretically, this may be due to the inhibition of cytochrome P450 1A2 by saffron.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the piece worth knowing: Fiorinal contains caffeine, and your body clears caffeine using a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. A small study hints that saffron may slow that enzyme down a bit, which could let caffeine linger longer in your system. In practice, that might mean the caffeine part of this medicine feels a little stronger or lasts longer, so you could notice things like jitteriness, a racing heartbeat, or trouble sleeping.

Keep this in perspective. This is mostly theoretical and comes from one small trial, and the effect showed up in men but not women. A pinch of saffron in cooking is very unlikely to matter; concentrated supplement doses are the bigger question. If you're thinking about a saffron supplement alongside Fiorinal, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

“The aspirin inside Fiorinal (aspirin, butalbital, caffeine) is the reason this list deserves careful reading rather than a quick skim. More than 200 of the supplements and herbs on file can thin the blood further and raise bleeding risk on top of aspirin's own antiplatelet effect, and even ordinary alcohol, beer and wine included, carr…”

About Saffron

What is Saffron?

Saffron
  • Depression and low mood
  • Anxiety
  • PMS symptoms
  • Memory and cognition
  • Eye health (age-related macular degeneration)

Saffron is a costly spice that has shown promise in early studies for mild-to-moderate depression and some mood and PMS symptoms, but most research uses small trials, so results are not definitive. It is generally well tolerated in food and small supplement amounts, but high doses can be harmful and it should be avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using saffron supplements.

About Aspirin, Butalbital, and Caffeine

What Is Aspirin, Butalbital, and Caffeine Used For?

Brand name: Fiorinal

Butalbital, aspirin, and caffeine capsules are used to relieve the symptom complex of tension headache — also called muscle contraction headache. This includes headache pain, psychic tension, and muscle tightness in the head, neck, and shoulders.

This medicine is intended for short-term use. Evidence supporting its safety and effectiveness for repeated or long-term use in recurrent headaches is not available, and extended use is not recommended because butalbital can be habit-forming.
