Saffron and Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Saffron interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Saffron in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone

Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Saffron interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron and CNS depressants might have additive sedative effects.
Clinical research shows that taking saffron extract 60 mg orally daily for 26 weeks can cause drowsiness and sedation. Animal research suggests that adding saffron to hexobarbital further increases sleeping and slows motor activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

The piece of this combo product that matters here is the hydrocodone, an opioid pain reliever that can already make you feel sleepy, foggy, or slowed down. Saffron, especially in concentrated supplement doses, has shown some mild sedating effects of its own in studies. Put the two together and the worry is simply that the drowsiness could stack up, so you might feel more tired, less alert, or a bit unsteady than you'd expect.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based mostly on how these things behave and on animal data, not strong human proof. A sprinkle of saffron in cooking is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using a daily saffron supplement while taking this medicine, check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and don't drive until you know how it affects you.

CAFFEINE

2 of 2

Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone also falls under CAFFEINE.

Theoretically, saffron might inhibit the metabolism of caffeine.
A small clinical study suggests that taking saffron powder 300 mg in 150 mL water daily for 5 days and then taking caffeine 200 mg seems to reduce caffeine metabolite levels in the saliva and urine in males, but not females. Theoretically, this may be due to the inhibition of cytochrome P450 1A2 by saffron.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the part of your combo pill that matters with saffron: the caffeine. A small study hinted that saffron might slow down the enzyme (CYP1A2) that clears caffeine from your body. If caffeine hangs around longer, you may feel more of its usual effects, like jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling on edge. Interestingly, this showed up in men but not women in that little study.

The good news is this is mostly theoretical and based on weak evidence, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The aspirin and hydrocodone pieces aren't really involved here. Food amounts of saffron are unlikely to matter, but concentrated supplements might. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a saffron supplement.

About Saffron

What is Saffron?

Saffron
  • Depression and low mood
  • Anxiety
  • PMS symptoms
  • Memory and cognition
  • Eye health (age-related macular degeneration)

Saffron is a costly spice that has shown promise in early studies for mild-to-moderate depression and some mood and PMS symptoms, but most research uses small trials, so results are not definitive. It is generally well tolerated in food and small supplement amounts, but high doses can be harmful and it should be avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using saffron supplements.
