Solomon's Seal and Glucagon

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Glucagon

Glucagon falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Solomon's Seal interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use may enhance hypoglycemic drug effects and alter blood glucose control. Monitor blood glucose.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here is the thing to keep in mind: glucagon does the opposite of most diabetes medicines. Instead of lowering blood sugar, it tells your liver to dump stored sugar into your blood, which is exactly why it is used as a rescue treatment when blood sugar drops dangerously low. The note we have on file is about Solomon's Seal possibly nudging blood sugar downward, and that effect is only theoretical, based on lab and animal work, not on solid human studies.

So in plain terms, this interaction is unlikely to cause you a real problem during an emergency, but if Solomon's Seal does lower sugar even slightly, it could make glucagon's job a little harder. The practical move is simple: keep checking blood sugar after using glucagon, and mention the herb to your pharmacist or doctor so they know what you are taking.
