Intestinal bacteria are responsible in part for converting soy isoflavones into their active forms. Antibiotics may decrease the amount of intestinal bacteria and decrease its ability to convert isoflavones.

Here's the gist of this one, and it's a mild concern. Zerbaxa (ceftolozane and tazobactam) is an antibiotic given in the hospital through an IV to fight serious infections. The interaction here runs in an unexpected direction: it's the antibiotic that may affect the soy, not the other way around. Your gut bacteria help turn soy isoflavones into their active forms, and antibiotics can knock down some of those helpful bacteria. So while you're on this medication, any soy you eat or take might give you a little less of its usual benefit.

The good news: this is theoretical and only based on lab-type reasoning, not real patient harm. It won't make the antibiotic less effective or cause new side effects. If you have questions, just check with your pharmacist.

About Ceftolozane and Tazobactam Injection

What Is Ceftolozane and Tazobactam Injection Used For?

Brand name: Zerbaxa

Zerbaxa (ceftolozane and tazobactam) is used to treat three types of serious bacterial infections in adults and children born at least 32 weeks gestational age. For complicated intra-abdominal infections (serious infections inside the belly), Zerbaxa is always given alongside another antibiotic called metronidazole. It also treats complicated urinary tract infections, including kidney infections (pyelonephritis).

Zerbaxa is also approved to treat hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia — lung infections that develop in the hospital or while a patient is on a breathing machine. It works only against specific bacteria confirmed or strongly suspected to be causing the infection.
