Soy and Nafcillin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Nafcillin

Nafcillin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Soy interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotics may decrease the activity of soy isoflavones.
Intestinal bacteria are responsible in part for converting soy isoflavones into their active forms. Antibiotics may decrease the amount of intestinal bacteria and decrease its ability to convert isoflavones.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with nafcillin and soy: this one runs the opposite direction of what most people expect. Nafcillin doesn't get changed by the soy. Instead, it's the soy that may be affected by the antibiotic. Your gut bacteria help turn soy isoflavones into their more active forms, and a strong antibiotic like nafcillin can knock down some of those helpful bacteria.

So if anything, you might get less benefit from the soy while you're on treatment, not more side effects. Honestly, this is a very minor, theoretical concern based only on lab work, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Nafcillin is given for a limited time anyway. Still, feel free to run any questions past your pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nafcillin page

“Anyone on nafcillin (Nallpen) is usually fighting a serious staph infection, and that makes this a time to be genuinely careful with supplements. Of the 58 with a known interaction on file, the two rated major, Siberian cocklebur and asarabacca, both stress the kidneys and could compound damage while you are being treated.”

About Soy

What is Soy?

  • Menopause symptoms (hot flashes)
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • Bone health
  • Plant-based protein source
  • General nutrition

Soy is a nutritious bean that is a staple food and a popular source of plant protein and isoflavones. Eating soy foods as part of a balanced diet is generally considered safe for most people, and there is moderate evidence it may modestly help cholesterol and some menopause symptoms, though results vary. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated soy isoflavone supplements, especially if you have a history of hormone-sensitive conditions.

About Nafcillin Injection

What Is Nafcillin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Nallpen

NAFCILLIN Injection is used to treat infections caused by staphylococci — specifically strains that produce an enzyme called penicillinase, which makes them resistant to regular penicillin. Susceptibility testing is performed to confirm the bacteria will respond to nafcillin before or shortly after starting treatment.

Nafcillin may also be started right away when a resistant staph infection is strongly suspected, even before test results are available. It should not be used for infections caused by bacteria that would respond to standard penicillin G, or for infections caused by non-staph organisms.
