Why this applies to Amprenavir

Amprenavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sweet Annie interacts with.

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the situation with Sweet Annie and amprenavir (Agenerase). Amprenavir is an HIV protease inhibitor that your body clears using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Sweet Annie can tug on that same enzyme, but the lab data points in two opposite directions: one component (artemisinin) seems to speed CYP3A4 up, while the whole-plant extract seems to slow it down. So we honestly can't say which way it would land in a real person.

If the enzyme sped up, amprenavir levels could drop, and with HIV medicines even small dips matter because they risk treatment failure and resistance. If it slowed down, you might see more side effects like nausea, rash, or tingling. This is only test-tube evidence, so don't panic, but please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.
